Remember the womens 10 000m race in the Athens Olympic, August 2004?
When Paula Radcliffe dropped out with 9 laps to go, I fired up the news reader -
it picked up the headline even before the race had ended!

universal search
No longer available, although hugely popular at one time. We explored the knowledge-mining capabilities of the internet - how to search or research multiple sources, issues of distinguishing mary or reported information, issues of free, chargeable or value-added information. The issues are still relevant. But we do not provide publically available tools.
web friends
No longer available. The concept was that you could harness the web to search for like-minded people. For example, you might point the software to a search page for 'Southampton gliding clubs' and it would search that page and nearby pages for the emails of people with a similar interest. Well received in the 1990s, then widely emulated. We withdrew from this area when we forsaw the era of email harvesting which, around 2000, resulted in junk mail offsetting much of the productivity gains of email.
