News is a fast, convenient way to keep up with the latest material published by news organisations or other providers.
- Use it to read the current headlines
- Use it to read summaries of news stories quickly, within one page
- Use it to follow the latest news in your area of interest
- Use it to store all your favorite news feeds in one place
- Use it to manage your time: read the news summaries before deciding whether to visit a site for the full story
News is available from our website at
www.1site1moment.com/p5.
- Download to your network by right-clicking the install link, unzipping and running.
This takes a moment or two depending on the size and speed of your internet link.
- How do I read news headlines?
Pick out the news source you want to read, and click the plus '+' sign next to it. The option will expand to list
all the current headlines from that source. Click the plus '+' sign against any headline to read a quick summary
of the news article. If you want to read the full article, click the headline.
- How do I read a full newspaper?
Pick out the news source you want to read and click the title itself. The entire current news will be shown. Again, you
can click the headlines of any section to read full articles.
- How do I set my own preferences for news?
Use the mouse to drag and drop any news source from our resources into the 'My news' section. You can also open your web browser, visit
any site that offers news feeds (look for the rss or xml logo) and drag and drop feeds from their web page directly into 'my news'.
- How do I find news articles relating to a particular subject?
Open the news feeds you are interested in, and press the special key combination ctrl-F (control and F). Then type in the key word
you are looking for.
- How do I make my own news from more than one source?
Group the sources you want together under one folder heading, then click on the title of the folder. This will give you a
single view of two or more sources.
- How do I go straight to my own news every morning?
Click the title of the news feed, or of a folder you have created containing more than one feed, and view your chosen news.
The system will remember your preference and take you straight back here - with updated news, of course - the next day.
- How do I remove news sources that no longer interest me?
Drag them to the 'cutting room floor' section.
- Where does the news come from?
News providers publish feeds, often in rss format, which summarise the news they have available. If they publish this freely on the internet, you may freely read the feeds. The benefit to the providers is that it can draw you into their site when you want to read a full story.
Click the 'rss' or 'opml' icon to view the raw structure of the feeds configured in your news reader.
- What formats are supported for news feeds?
We aware of various formats, including rss, opml, rdf and atom. This covers all the ones we ever use. Please contact us if you are aware of any others.
- Some opml files take an age to open.
Yes. Opml files are lists of feeds. Sometimes people use them to create their own list of favorite feeds from different sources. Othertimes, content providers use them to provide an index to every feed they offer. The second sort are often machine-generated and can be quite large.
- Why does News sometimes hangs for a long time when I try to access certain feeds?
We try and allow for intermittent performance on the internet. But a news reader, by its nature, is looking for material on many other sites. If you need to terminate News, use ctr-alt-del to enter the task manager, look for mshta.exe under the 'processes' list, and end the process.
News is a broadband application.
This means you install it by saving the application to your local network or drive and running it from there.
The application requires internet access because it uses modules from the internet.
One advantage of this are that the local installation is small. Another is that we can often make upgrades
to central modules without you having to trouble to re-install.
- Check you have always-on internet access. It does not neccesarily have to be broadband.
- You will need Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5 or later, for this application to run
News normally runs fast and cleanly.
Check the 'installation notes' to help you get it running the first time.
If you still experience difficulty, here are some other typical issues:
- error messages on start up.
Is the configuration corrupted? First take a back up, then look for the 1s1m/p5 folder under your
documents and settings / application data folder, delete the files, then try re-running.
This will however mean you will have to recreate your 'my news' choices.
- Unexpected error messages.
Are you still connected to the internet? Printermatic is a broadband application.
- Security error messages.
Check you are running the application from your local disk or network, and not from our website.
